LIBRARY AUTOMATION SERVICES TO SBN-RMS AND SBN RML-BIBLIOROMA POLES

The Italian National Library System (SBN) began in 1979, thanks to a libraries computerization project supported by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage (Ministero per i Beni e le Attvitā Culturali – MBAC) and carried out by the National Center for a Single Catalogue (Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico – ICCU), with the Regions’ and Universities’ cooperation. SBN’s main goal is the development of a unique online catalogue, to include the book stock of all the Italian libraries and to allow resource sharing and document access.

Libraries taking part in this project are divided into local Poles, and run all their services through automatized procedures with computers linked to a main frame, in sharing cataloguing. Poles enter the central system, named SBN Index and managed by ICCU, which contains the collective catalogue of all the participating libraries: it is possible to know which libraries hold a certain document by referring to the Index.
