LIBRARIES IN THE SCHOOLS

Thanks to the cooperation with the Italian National Library System (Servizio Bibliotecario nazionale - SBN) and its services, the project “Libraries in the schools” (Biblioteche nelle scuole - BNS) is born. Its main goals are the opening to the territory and to the world of the libraries, the supply of innovative services, and an easier access to the information.
The project has an experimental feature and a three-year duration. It is promoted by MIUR-DGSI (Ministero dell’Istruzione, dell’Universitą e Ricerca, Direzione Generale Servizi Informativi – the Ministry for Education, Universities and Research, Informative Services Head Office) and MIT (Technological Innovation Department – Dipartimento dell’innovazione tecnologica), in collaboration with the National Center for a Single Catalogue (Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico – ICCU) and the Ministry of Cultural Heritage (Ministero per i Beni e le Attivitą Culturali – MBAC).

The three involved inter-university consortiums CILEA, CINECA, and CASPUR, offer their specific expertise to ensure the project’s full achievement; on the basis of a detailed agreement with MIUR, signed in 2003, each consortium’s tasks have been fixed:

CILEA deals with staff training of the school libraries involved in the project. It also develops the following: School metaOPAC, Trouble Ticketing, Virtual Reference Desk (VRD), and Repository.

CINECA develops the e-learning platform, the schools’ and libraries’ register, and their portal.

CASPUR deals with the project’s promotion and communication, the realization of the school OPAC and a monitoring system.

Moreover, CILEA and CAPSUR will respectively realize the Central-Northern (Aosta Valley, Piedmont, Lombardy, Liguria, Emilia-Romagna, Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Trentino-South Tyrol, Tuscany, and Sardinia) and Central-Southern (Abruzzo, Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Latium, Marches, Molise, Apulia, Sicily, and Umbria) SBN Poles of the Italian school libraries. In perspective, CILEA and CAPSUR will favor the school libraries (those sufficiently self-governing) in joining the project, involving Regions and Universities, and implementing the SBN OPAC.

The three consortiums, with their subscribed engagement and planned actions, will contribute to valorize the school paper and electronic book resources, to integrate school libraries into the SBN system, and, consequently, to renew the institution of the school library that, as stressed by some international organizations like UNO, UNESCO and IFLA, play a social and cultural role of strategic importance in contrasting and preventing new kinds of analphabetism and social exclusion.
