CASPUR-SNS agreement
 The Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa and CASPUR have signed a three years agreement devoted to common initiatives in promoting high performance computing in computational chemistry, physics and mathematics.
The agreement which includes the CEICS computing centre of the SNS and will be coordinated by Prof. V. Barone, will involve education activities and sharing of experiences in new computing technologies like GPU computing.

New IBM Power 5 nodes Available
 Since Monday May 8 2006 the new IBM Power 5 HPC cluster is available. The cluster is based upon 21 8-way p5 575 systems, interconnected by a High Performance Switch.
Transition from Power 4 to Power 5 should not cause any problem, however we recommend users to recompile their own codes.
The new cluster front-end is pwr503: it is accessible for interactive login by ssh to man.caspur.it.
Starting from the same date, batch job submission on Power 4 nodes is disabled. The cluster is available for interactive login during the next week (monday 05-15-06). Its front-end is reachable by ssh to pwr4s0.caspur.it. Users are kindly requested to remove their files stored in local scratch areas, backing them up on Power 5 cluster or NFS areas.

IBM processors renewal (update)
CASPUR’s new IBM processors have revealed an hardware defect of difficult identification. Though the supplier’s care in solving the problem, it provoked a considerable delay in the starting of the new processors. We suppose that, after CASPUR’s systems and applicative tests, our processors will be available to the users at the beginning of May. The dismantlement of the machines based on Power 4 processors will be delayed consequently.

CASPUR has recently leased a new computing system, made up of 21 nodes with 8 Power 5 processors interconnected with the High Performance Switch Federation and with a shared area of 20 TB.

New HP GS1280 computer
 We bring to our users’ attention that next 07/01/2005 the new computer HP GS1280 will be available.
It consists of 32 alpha ev7 processors at 1150 MHz and a total RAM of 64 GB. Four CPUs are reserved to the interactive login via ssh and the remaining 28 to batch computation.
The cluster is configured with SGE queue system, and the parallel environment sm is also available.
The rating is based on the highest bracket, already imposed for POWER 4 environment.

E-mail system evolution

AMD Opteron cluster for high-performance computing
 From Jenuary, 1st, 2005 a new infrastructure for high-performance computing is active. SLACS HPC Cluster has been developed in the course of the collaboration between CASPUR and Sardinian LAboratory for Computational materials Science (SLACS), and consists of 24 2 GHz AMD Opteron biprocessor nodes, interconnected in Gigabit Ethernet technology.
CASPUR’s users can employ a part of this cluster’s computing resources, which in any case remain of SLACS’s property. Those whishing to test AMD Opteron technology in HPC sector can e-mail to cmslab@caspur.it.

New NEC SX-6 node
 From February, 8, 2005 NEC SX-6 is available at CASPUR. It is a complete parallel vector system consisting of 8 vector processors, each with 9 GFlops of peak vector performance, and for a total of 64 GB RAM.

Master in System and Network Security
Enrolments in the Second Master in System and Network Security for business and civil service are now open.
It is organized by CASPUR in collaboration with the Department of Computer Sciences of the University of Rome “La Sapienza”.
Applications must be submitted within February, 21, 2005.

Last August, CASPUR, signed the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities. This document, signed by over 40 institutions (governaments, universities, research institutions, funding agencies, foundations, professional and learned societies libraries, museums, archives etc.) states that new possibilities of knowledge dissemination have to be supported. not only through the classical form but also and increasingly through the open access paradigm via the Internet.

New tool W.I.S.A. (Web Interface for Seismological Applications)
